  1. Historical Background

  2. The Diocese of Central Tanganyika was carved from the Diocese of Mombasa, Kenya in 1926 and inaugurated as a Diocese in 1927 when its first Bishop, George Chambers from Australia, was consecrated as bishop. He retired in 1946 and was succeeded by Bishop Wynne Jones from Australia. Bishop Jones died in 1951 from a car accident and was buried in Dar es Salaam. Bishop Alfred Stanway from Australia served as bishop of this diocese from 1951 until 1971. The first Tanzanian Diocesan Bishop, Yohana Madinda succeeded him. Bishop G. Mdimi Mhogolo served as bishop of The Diocese of Central Tanganyika for 25 years since his election in 1989, until his death on 27 March 2014. The current bishop of the Diocese, Bishop Dickson Chilongani, was elected bishop of The Diocese of Central Tanganyika on 23 November 2014.

  3. The legal status of the Diocese is that of a charitable organization and it was registered in 1955 under the Societies Ordinance of Tanganyika.Typically, each parish has a main church and 4 or more sister churches in sub-villages, working at a grass roots level to minister pastorally with outreach and mission directives.
